Wildflowers and Paved Beginnings
Right in front of the parking lot, a wide-open field greets you with several vibrant sections of wildflowers. It is a colorful welcome that instantly shifts your mindset away from the nearby traffic. The Evergreen Trail officially kicks off to the left of the parking lot as a wide, paved path. Thick forest hugs both sides of the walkway, offering immediate shade as you begin your trek.
A Quiet Creek and Hidden Neighborhoods
As you make your way down the paved trail, a thick forest opens up on both sides of the trail, revealing a meandering, quiet, and perfectly still creek. The water winds gracefully through a mixed forest of deciduous trees and evergreens, like cedar and pine. If you follow the pavement and stay to the right, this section of the Evergreen Trail wraps around near the cul-de-sac of the Jefferson Woods housing development before narrowing down.
Along this stretch, you will encounter the comforting hum of everyday life. You will pass neighbors walking their dogs, a woman pushing a baby stroller, younger groups power-walking, and an older gentleman equipped with a hiking pole and a camera. The distant, playful sounds of schoolkids from a nearby school blend beautifully with the rustling of leaves in the wind.
Stepping Off the Pavement
As you follow the creek, you will find several natural side paths leading right down to the water’s edge. It is the perfect spot to rock-hop across large boulders, dip your toes in, or just enjoy the slow-moving water. Soon, you will cross a highly picturesque, long wooden and metal bridge spanning the creek—a perfect spot to stop and take in the view.
The true magic happens when you leave the pavement behind. The Evergreen Trail transitions into a natural trail covered in crunchy leaves and soft pine needles, running alongside a chain-link fence covered in vines. Here, the terrain becomes a bit more authentic with exposed roots and patches of ivy underfoot.
Deep into the Mature Woods
The deeper you venture into the loop, the more the forest matures. Massive oak trees and soaring pines tower overhead. The city noise completely fades away, replaced by the deep creaking of trees swaying rhythmically in the breeze. Though there are quite a few downed trees well off the trail, the path itself is exceptionally well-maintained.
Educational markers line the path, and a sturdy bench offers a perfect place to sit back, relax, and listen to the birds. It is so peaceful out here that it is easy to forget you are just minutes away from the chaotic rhythm of the city. Trail markers are few and far between in the woods, but it creates a wonderful sense of wandering without ever actually being lost. You truly feel all alone with nature.
The Teddy Bear Secret
Just as the hike winds down, a wide clearing appears to reveal one of the trail's sweetest surprises: an old tree stump topped with teddy bears, toys, and a little angel figure. It is a heartwarming touch of community character. From there, the Evergreen Trail opens up into a wide, grassy path before narrowing one last time to guide you right back to the library entrance where your journey began.
