Chasing Waterfalls and History: An Epic Day in Portugal’s Only National Park
When you think of Portugal, your mind probably drifts to the sun-drenched streets of Lisbon, the stunning riverfront of Porto, or the coastal cliffs of the Algarve. But if you head north toward the Spanish border, you’ll find a landscape that feels completely detached from the rest of the country: Peneda-Gerês National Park.
As Portugal’s only protected national park, Gerês is a paradise of granite peaks, ancient oak forests, deep gorges, and water so clear it looks blue in the sun. On our recent summer trip, Ginger, Maria, Amelia, Alex, and I decided to skip the city sidewalks of Porto for a day, rent a car, and immerse ourselves in the wild beauty of this incredible region. What followed was an unforgettable 8-mile trek that perfectly captured the "hike more, worry less" spirit.
The Drive from Porto: Trading Cityscapes for Mountain Peaks
We picked up our rental car early in Porto and pointed it north. The drive is straightforward and incredibly scenic, taking us through rolling green hills as the urban landscape dissolved into rugged, towering mountains. Within a couple of hours, we crossed into the park boundaries and were immediately struck by how raw and untouched the wilderness felt.
Over 8 Miles of Wonders: Trails, Scrambles, and Wild Goats
We pieced together a custom loop using a combination of traditional trails to get a full taste of what the park has to offer. The terrain was mostly moderate, tracking along old shepherd paths and dirt tracks, but it threw in just enough rocky scrambles to keep things exciting and test our footing.
As we navigated the higher elevations, we were treated to sweeping, dramatic views of the vast valleys below. At one point, we even crossed paths with a herd of the park's famous wild goats, gracefully navigating the steep granite slabs above us.
A Journey Through Time: Megalithic Mysteries and Roman Roads
What makes hiking in Europe so unique is the history woven right into the dirt beneath your boots. Peneda-Gerês isn't just a natural wonder; it’s a living museum.
Along our route, we stumbled upon prehistoric megalithic structures standing as silent reminders of the people who inhabited these mountains thousands of years ago. Later in the hike, our trail aligned with an ancient Roman road. Walking the same stone paths where Roman soldiers marched centuries ago, complete with surviving milestones, added an incredible layer of historical awe to our trek.
Waterfalls, Natural Springs, and Secret Swimming Holes
If there is one thing you need to know about Gerês, it’s that water is everywhere. The park is alive with the sound of rushing streams, hidden cascades, and pristine waterfalls tumbling into deep stone basins.
The summer sun was beating down, so finding these secluded swimming holes felt like discovering gold. We stopped at a spectacular pool beneath a rushing waterfall, kicked off our boots, and took a highly anticipated, ice-cold plunge. Nothing washes away the trail dust quite like swimming in pure mountain water.
Before pushing through the final stretch of our loop, we found a crystal-clear natural spring bubbling right out of the mountainside. We gathered around to refill our water bottles with the coldest, freshest water imaginable—nature’s perfect hydration station. We even managed to find some wild blackberries growing along the trailside to sweeten the journey.
Wrapping Up a Perfect Day
By the time we made it back to our rental car, our legs were tired, our boots were muddy, and our hearts were full. Peneda-Gerês completely exceeded our expectations, delivering the perfect blend of physical challenge, rich history, and stunning natural beauty.
