Riverside History and Swimming Holes: Bean Shoals Canal Trail
There is something deeply grounding about a trail that follows the rhythm of a river, and our recent trek along the Bean Shoals Canal Trail gave us exactly that. Located in the beautiful Yadkin Valley section of Pilot Mountain State Park in Pinnacle, NC, this quick 3-mile riverside hike offers a perfect blend of historic intrigue, expansive water views, and prime spots to cool off.
With our bathing suits packed and a picnic lunch ready, Ginger, our dog Sophie, and I hit the trail for a sun-drenched afternoon of exploring shallow shoals, massive stone walls, and rushing rapids.
Walking Through History
The Bean Shoals Canal Trail wastes no time immersing you in the past. As we walked, we quickly encountered the venerable stone retaining walls of a canal project that dates back to the early 1800s. It is incredible to stand beside these massive, hand-hewn structures and imagine the monumental effort it took to build them, even if the canal itself was never fully completed.
Adding to the historical and rugged atmosphere of the hike, an active railroad line cuts right through the area. Sophie watched with curious ears as we crossed near the tracks, adding a cool, old-school Americana vibe to the wilderness around us.
Island Hopping and Fast-Flowing Rapids
The real star of this hike is the mighty Yadkin River. The trail tracks alongside a dynamic stretch of water characterized by multiple islands breaking up the current and creating a maze of fast-flowing rapids.
The sound of the rushing water accompanied us the whole way, a constant reminder of the river's power. In contrast to the deep rapids, the river also spreads out into wide, shallow shoals, where the water ripples gently over smooth river stones.
Swimming and Lunch by the Water
It didn't take long for us to find the perfect bend in the river featuring a series of inviting swimming holes. We swapped our hiking gear for bathing suits and waded into the refreshing water. Sophie, of course, was leading the charge, paddling through the calm spots and splashing happily in the shallows.
After drying off on the sunny banks, we unpacked our picnic lunch right by the water. Sitting on the rocks, listening to the rapids, and watching the river flow past the small green islands was the definition of "hike more, worry less."
If you are looking for a trail that combines rich local history with plenty of opportunities to jump in the water and relax, the Bean Shoals Canal Trail is a Piedmont treasure you can't miss.
