Chasing Cascades: Giant Trees, Alpine Dips, and Alpaca Cuddles at Lake 22
If you are looking for the ultimate Pacific Northwest day trip that packs old-growth forests, rugged mountain peaks, and a pristine alpine lake into one flawless adventure, lace up your boots. Lake 22 (Trail 702) is calling.
For this trek, we rented a car in Seattle and made the scenic 90-minute drive out to the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Clocking in at about 6 miles round-trip, this trail delivers some of the most rewarding views in the lower Cascade Mountains with just the right amount of rugged fun.
Here is what it is like out on the trail.
Into the Ancient Forest
The journey begins under a canopy of massive, towering trees that make you feel wonderfully small. The damp, earthy scent of the Pacific Northwest wilderness hugs the trail as you walk alongside incredible water features. Almost immediately, the soundtrack to your hike becomes the rushing water of several small, cascading waterfalls cutting through the vibrant green landscape.
As you push higher, the trail shows its true, rugged character. You will navigate stretches of boulder fields and engaging rock scrambling, where paying attention to your footing is half the fun. The path is decorated with patches of wild flowers and flowering shrubs, adding bursts of color against the deep gray stone. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife too—there are plenty of birds and small critters keeping you company along the switchbacks.
The Crown Jewel: Lake 22
After working your way through the rocks and trees, the forest opens up to reveal the spectacular sight of Lake 22. Nestled tightly at the base of dramatic, sheer cliffs, the crystal blue, pristine water looks almost mirror-like. Looking up, you are treated to breathtaking scenic views of the lower Cascade Mountains, including a few dramatic, ice-capped peaks towering in the distance.
We found a perfect spot along the rocky shoreline to unpack lunch and soak in the sun. The water was crisp, clear, and utterly inviting, making an alpine swim the ultimate reward for the uphill climb.
A Soft, Fluffy Detour
The adventure did not end at the trailhead. On the drive back to Seattle, we spotted a local alpaca farm and just had to pull over.
It turned out to be the perfect detour. We met the incredibly welcoming owner, who gave us a personal tour of the property. We got to meet and hang out with a dozen charming alpacas, plus two protective llamas who were keeping watch over the herd. Before hitting the road again, we couldn't resist stopping by the farm shop to pick up some ultra-cozy alpaca wool socks and blankets—the perfect, tangible reminders of an unforgettable day in the mountains.
