Hiking Discovery Park Seattle: The Ultimate 6-Mile Coastal Urban Escape

When you visit Seattle for the very first time, everyone tells you to go to the Space Needle or Pike Place Market. But if you want to experience the true, rugged magic of the Pacific Northwest without leaving the city limits, you have to head to Discovery Park. That is exactly what drew my family and I out to this incredible park during our very first vacation to the region. As first-time visitors to Washington, we wanted a trail that captured the legendary beauty of the area, and this 534-acre urban oasis delivered exactly that.

To get the absolute most out of our day, we combined the iconic Discovery Park Loop Trail with the rugged beach descent of the Lighthouse Loop Trail. Together, they created a solid, scenic 6-mile route packed with classic Pacific Northwest magic.

Whether you are a local or planning your own first-time trip to the Emerald City, here is exactly what to expect from this premier coastal trail.

Exploring the Discovery Park Loop Trail and Massive Trees

We kicked off our trek on the main Discovery Park Loop Trail, which serves as the park's central artery. The path consists of wide, hard-packed dirt, making it highly accessible for families.

As newcomers to the region, the landscape immediately blew us away. Our group wound through deep forest groves dominated by truly massive trees unlike anything we have back home. Walking beneath these towering, ancient cedars and Douglas firs, the dense canopy completely blocked out all city noise, replacing traffic sounds with rustling ferns and native bird calls.

Along the edge of the path, we hit a jackpot of wild blackberry bushes. My daughter Maria and I stopped to eat copious amounts of the sweet, sun-ripened wild berries right off the vine, fueling up for the rest of our walk.

As the trees cleared, the trail opened up into sweeping, golden meadows. Standing on top of the massive sea bluffs, we caught incredible views of the Seattle skyline glittering in the distance, alongside a breathtaking, clear view of Mt. Rainier towering on the horizon. Seeing that massive snow-capped volcano for the first time is a core memory we won't soon forget.

Dropping Down to the West Point Lighthouse Beach

Ready for a workout, we branched off the main trail to tackle the beach descent toward the West Point Lighthouse in Seattle.

We navigated a series of steep wooden staircases down the side of the bluff. As we descended, the air temperature dropped, and the crisp smell of saltwater took over.

At beach level, the landscape shifts to a rugged, cobblestone shoreline. The beach was filled with unique stones, and my daughter Amelia spent a wonderful afternoon exploring the shoreline, hunting for exceptionally pretty rocks to admire.

Just a short walk down the coast, we reached the historic 1881 West Point Lighthouse. Its stark white-and-red frame stands beautifully against the saltwater backdrop. We stopped here to rest, watched sailboats cut through the water, and even spotted a couple of local harbor seals poking their heads above the waves.

The Return Climb: A True Seattle Coastal Hike

What goes down must come up. The trek back up from the beach to the top of the bluff is a legendary leg-burner. It features a series of steep switchbacks and dirt stairs that will quickly get your heart rate up.

Alex set a brisk pace on the incline. By the time we topped out back onto the main bluff, our crew had definitely earned our afternoon snacks. We reconnected with the final leg of the main loop, finishing our 6-mile tracking loop right where we started.
