Fueling Up and Footwear Fails
Our morning started the best way any morning can in Costa Rica—with a massive, traditional breakfast. We completely loaded up on black beans, tostados, fresh fruit, juice, eggs, plantains, and perfectly seasoned speckled rice and beans (gallo pinto). Trust me, when you are about to tackle a rainforest hike, you want every single one of those carbs.
Energized and excited, we arrived at Arenal Hanging Bridges Park early, ready to plunge into the canopy. The park stands out as a premiere eco-tourism destination committed to sustainability and preserving the rich biodiversity of the region’s ecosystem. Because it is a pristine, protected private rainforest reserve, they have incredibly strict safety guidelines. A park worker took one look at Ginger’s beloved Keens and shook his head. Because her sandals had open slots, they were deemed a safety hazard for the trail. Naturally, our inner completionists kicked in—we hadn’t traveled all this way to turn around at the entrance! One quick emergency stop at the gift shop later, Ginger had a brand-new pair of closed-toe shoes, and our trek was officially back on track.
Bridging the Highland and Lowland Canopy
The trail itself is a smooth, easy-to-moderate hike that makes for a fantastic 4-mile loop through a highly diverse, unique ecosystem. Because the reserve sits right on the boundary where highland and lowland forests blend, it integrates an incredible variety of plant and animal species from both environments.
Everywhere we looked, the forest was alive. We were incredibly fortunate to have an expert tour guide with us, who pointed out too many birds to count flashing through the trees. From vibrant feathers to unique calls, the canopy was buzzing with life, alongside fascinating jungle insects blending seamlessly into the bark.
The real stars of the park, of course, are the bridges. The trail features 15 bridges in total, and 6 of them are massive, soaring suspension bridges. Walking across them is an absolute thrill. Several hang an intimidating 148 feet above deep, lush valleys, and they sway significantly with every step you take. The bridges are constructed of sturdy metal, but they feature open slits across the bottom. If you have the nerve to look straight down between your feet, you can see the dizzying forest floor dropping away far beneath you.
Waterfalls and Mighty Ants
Halfway through the canopy loop, we decided to take a side trail that plunges deeper down into the canyon. The detour leads straight to the base of Fortuna Waterfall, a gorgeous 50-foot wall of cascading white water hidden away in the dense green jungle. Standing near the base and feeling the cool, refreshing mist spray across our faces was the perfect reward for our steep descent.
Back on the main trail, we had to pause to witness one of the coolest natural spectacles on earth: a massive highway of leaf-cutter ants. These tiny creatures live in mega-colonies that can hold up to 5 million members. We watched in awe as individual ants carried pieces of leaves up to three times their own body weight. Our guide had shared a mind-blowing fact about them earlier: the ants don't actually eat the leaves. Instead, they carry the clippings deep underground to cultivate their own private fungal gardens. To keep this operation running, they have evolved intricate, structured societies that are among the oldest and most elaborate on earth. Watching them work put our own 4-mile trek into perspective!
